@offpatsmile He understood human psychology and he played on the fact that people believe things...
The stories were part of his persona...There are stories of those who love him and those that didn't and found and intelligent man with bad clothes and long white hair threatening....If the staff really had a problem they would not have let him practically live there....Without his fundraising they would not be a function hospital.

@emmyjo720 well possible - but then he got so used to making up stories about so much that in the end I am not sure he knew which ones he'd made up and which actually happened.
He did do some great things, but people I know ( Stoke Mandeville staff & patients, including close friend and my mum) said he was creepy, and didn't like him coming around...

He got used to having the piss ripped out of him in later life - "anything as long as it involved publicity" being his motto... the Louis Theroux interview in which he admitted to kidnapping and a fair number of delusions of adequacy does the more disturbing expose.
