Still one of the very best records of the very competitive 1967-1968
Soul era, when R&B was peaking, just short of the Sly Stone era.
Bobby Smith sang the hell out of this great composition, got everyone's
attention at Motown...and beyond (enter Thom Bell down the line....) rest,
is history.

Ivy Joe Hunter & Mickey Stevenson never wrote nothing better.
You can feel the pain in Bobby's voice as he sings this.
My personal opinion, Mr Hunter belongs in the R&R HOF for this,
and "Just Ask the lonely" alone.
Think Thom Bell did'nt notice Bobby's & the Spinners' sincere and
(then) unsung talent back then?

Sorry to both of you Tempts lovers (as I am).
Tempts version was album filler, David Ruffin, great as he was at his peak,
don't come close to Bobby Smith's "painful" version.
Not even close this time.
This, (along with I Could never love another) are epitome's of the Detroit sound.

Was in the Navy when this song came out an got a " Dear Jim " letter from home. She did sign it Truly Yours ..................Patty. At the time they were" the saddest words I ever read".

I am 63 years old and this song helped me to understand the loss of young love. I was so in love and the woman i loved was in love with someone else. And when i found out she was already gone and expecting by someone else. I cried to this song until i could cry no more. Today this song bring me back to that time and for a moment it brings back the pain. But it is a wonderful feeling because it helps me to remember what true love really is. Thank you spinners for this song! It helped me.

one of my all time records by the spinners. They just don't make them loike this any more.

Its a matter of opinion. I think the Tempts version is the best. The stuff that Norman released on them I think was the right thing to do,they adapted to the times, and they have love songs as well as political and psychedelic songs which makes it hard to get tired of The Temptations. The songs were great, but more importantly the Tempts were sharing leads on all of those songs. It think the Tempts arguably reached their peak during that time because they went to a 5 man lead format

This song is a great song. The Temptations' version is a great version, but not as good as this original. I actually prefer their version for release than much of the stuff that Norman Whitfield released on them in the later 60's.
I only have their version on CD, i dont own The Temptations 25th Anniversary on LP
