elrojazz...i hope you realize...the original maker of the glass harmonica is benjamin franklin. i highly doubt he put gold in lay on an invention that threatened his life(after playing it people accused his instrument of being cursed)

Actually, at that time, pretty much everything had lead. Cooking pots, plumbing, and even medical prescriptions. Lead is hardly soaked by skin. It is rather ingested or inhaled.

Even though crystal contains lead, it is only rumorous to think it is the cause of the disappearance.

It is most likely because people associated events with the instrument. And being called "Voices of Angel", the glass armonica is subject to being referred to Hell as well when something happens.

Additionally, the paint was inside the cup which was not in direct contact of the fingers. Having the paint outside would render the instrument to be unplayable as it is a matter of friction between the wet fingers and the glass.

The main reason why Glass Organs/Harmonica's became obsolete is because anyone that played the Glass Organ would die a few years later. The instrument was thought to cursed or sound to close to the sound of Angles or the voice of GOD. Any one who played the instrument would feel GOD's wrath.

Unknowingly the reason why every one was die-ing is because the original maker of the glass Organ would decorate the organ with gold inlay which contained Lead. Thus the players fingers would soak in the leaded gold and get Lead poisoning and die. Thanks Alan Alda!
