I work for Idaho Power Company in Boise, Idaho and this spring the company was putting together a health fair with a weight loss competition. When they made this video in April it had been about 13 months since I started to lose and had lost 135 pounds at that point. I offered to let them use my story as a way to get the employees excited about taking charge of their weigh and health risks. Since I started in the spring on 2009 I have set my goals pretty high. I ran a marathon in December last year and a couple of half marathons this spring. In May, after this video was made I completed the Boise Ironman course the Saturday before the official race just to see if I could do it. I didn't set any records but I did finish. I was best at the run with a 13.1 miles in 1 hour 55 minutes. After the Ironman test I set my sights on qualifying for the Boston Marathon which I was able to do at the St George Marathon with a time of 3:14. I would love to run in every race I could to share my story with others.

My goal here is to help show people that it is possible to reach your goals if you give it everything you've got and never give up. I don't feel like I have any special physical abilities but more importantly a positive attitude a will to succeed. If I could package the way I feel I would give that gift to everyone who has ever struggled with weight so they would know that it is worth every ounce of energy you put into changing your life.

Goals are dreams with deadlines! Stop dreaming.

  • How long did it take you to get to your current weight and fitness level? I'm running about 4ks now 30min. I wanna run longer, and burn of body fat

  • @shempone @shempone - I lost 100 pounds in 5 months mostly from swimming for an hour each day during the week and riding 20 miles on my mountain bike on Sat and Sunday. I started running and lost the last 35 over the next 6 months or so. Runners World had a good article about running to lose weight I saw today titled Do you want to lose weight? youtube wont let me post the link so you can google it I guess...Check out my blog too. I feel so good now that I am running ultra-marathons.

  • This is so inspirational Ryan. You have done an INCREDIBLE job... and for the best reason, your family! I would love to see a part two or continuation of the story as I saw you hint at in one of your other comments! I just want you to know, you have helped me alot, and since seeing your video I have for the first time been able to focus on taking it one day at a time and not setting myself up to fail by trying to lose 100lbs yesterday! I think this really is an amazing video and you are AWESOME!

  • @Wellhungarian

Thanks for the kind words. If you are looking for a Part II, check out my youtube page and watch the Bear 100 video

  • @RyanA318 Youtube wouldn't let me post the link so its above under Uploaded Comments. Anyway, I have kept up the exercise and kept setting new goals. After running the Boston Marathon I started doing trail ultamarathons. I did 3 50 milers in the early summer and did the BEAR 100 miler in Logan UT 3 weeks ago. I read on your youtube site at the top...success is never giving up. I couldn't agree with you more. Let me know if I can ever help! ryan-in-boise.blogspot.com

  • Thanks MsGoddogit! I guess I should finish my story or make a part two! I ran the Boston Marathon in April and it was amazing. I finished in 5000th place but I was ahead of 22000 other people! I ran a marathon yesterday (May 7th) too. It was a lot of fun because my wife and I finished together. She was finishing a half marathon and I was finishing the full marathon. I love sharing my story so pass this along to anyone who might like it!!

  • You rock.

  • Ryan, thank you so much for posting this video. I am struggling with motivation on my diet. I keep saying "I'll start tomorrow". Before you know it, months have passed. But I am determined now. What else can you suggest for someone like me with low motivation? Can we exchange emails??

  • You really should try and get this out to more people, ryan. You're awesome!
