Nominated for a Golden Globe, this is the story of the Sicilian town of Bagheria, also known as Baaria. Written and directed by Academy Award® winner Giuseppe Tornatore (CINEMA PARADISO).
The story follows Peppino Torrenuova (Francesco Scianna) from his childhood as a high-spirited cowherd's son in the '30s, to his forbidden romance and marriage to the beautiful Mannina (Margareth Madè) through a turbulent time of Italian political upheaval.

BAARÌA is a humorous and often heartbreaking tale set against the backdrop of a vibrant Sicilian town in the first half of the twentieth century.

It was wonderful film, I loved how the director linked the child's school corner punishment with the end of the film's Back To the Future twist. Excellent cast, funny & emotionally moving as well. The transition points of time in the character's life are very easy to miss, the music and historical background well done as well. A classic Italian film that is not exceptional, but very well done as a whole. Here, attention to detail overcomes an at first simple story of a person's or city's life.

I watched the very graphic sex scene (some of which is seen at 0:51) sitting next to the 71-year-old headmaster of my Catholic school, who by coincidence was in the cinema at the same time. So much win.

I have been searching for this movie, ever since I saw it on an Alitalia flight to a connect flight from Italy to Israel. This movie, it didn't have subtitles, and I understood every word of it (psst, I don't speak Italian). This movie, I am so glad if found it. A gem, if ever I saw one!
