I have been three times too and only once did the penguins not want to come out. They are not forced to do it either. The last time I was there the Gentoos could not be arsed and the Kings sodded off to the far side of the enclosure avoiding the keepers altogether. It was December 07, really icy cold and they just wanted to stay huddled away. Sometimes they cannot wait to get out and other times they just cannot be bothered. They are bloody funny to watch :)

Best time to go to the zoo seems to be when it rains. Brings out a lot of animals and drives all the chimps, baboons and mokeys inside so you get a good view of all of them. I saw the painted hunting dogs for the first time on Friday cause of the rain =].
