Vesselina Kasarova at a concert at NDK in Sofia, Bulgaria circa 1996. This is Isabella's aria 'Cruda sorte, amor tiranno' from Rossini's opera,L'Italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers).

This song is available on her RCA Red Seal CD: Rossini Arias & Duets.

  • Thank heavens that Marilyn Horne has not one but three proper heirs to her legacy : Ewa Podles, Jennifer Larmore and, of course, Vesselina Kasarova.

  • Heh, heh, I know. We're a spoiled bunch, ay? :o) It sure is great to live in the golden age of coloratura mezzos! If only I can hear them live more often. I really live in the wrong part of the world when it comes to opera. :o(

  • She's definitely the funniest Rossini singer I've ever seen/heard! It's great to watch something that's so different! Thanks for these great clips, Smorg!

  • My pleasure, matie. :o) I love how she isn't afraid to mime to get herself into the music even in a concert setting (she's taken some criticism for it from people who find it distracting, but I love it because it looks genuine to me). :o)

  • Whatever the critics may say, one thing is for sure - she is never conventional, never ordinary. She is not scared to turn the performance into parody and to break the legato from time to time to make the whole thing sound more expressive and the way she sees it. And her voice is able to convey so different feelings. I will never get tired listening this piece over and over again.

  • What an interesting performance. She managed to be "different" without sacrificing musicality. I would think Maestro Rossini would be elated.

  • orrendo,inascoltabile,troppo poco italiana!!!

  • Has anyone heard Nezhdanova? Although a Soprano, flexibility is the same for any voice

that is trained according to the "distinguishing marks" of the Golden Era of Singing (i.e.) not pushing to enlarge the voice or covering, both of which are representative of

the downfall of singing as heard everywhere today.

  • I enjoy a very wide variety of musical genres, but this is probably my most-watched YouTube video. I've seen other performances (I loved Callas) and can related to much of the criticism. But in the end, Vesselina remains my sweetheart. She must be a fun person to be with. I wish!

  • She knows nothing of bel canto style. This is a bore! However, a good voice!!

  • @1958Zarina I agree, She is beyond the academic thing. Stop with the boring, she dares!

  • Wow, she's incredible!

She is definatly amazing to watch live and in concert. The mimeing and gesturing can be distracting depending (example Dessay in studio, some Gruberova, some Podles, in my humble wee opinion, not that it's a bad thing.). But when Kasarova does it....it adds another depth to it, for me anyway. Thanks for the great post ^_^

  • HURRAY~! I love this. She's amazing to watch when she sings. Some peoples mannerisms are...distracting...the way she sings...it's different. Brava.
