The Babys were a popular British rock group of the late 1970s.
It is Michael that plays the solo lead guitar in the main of this track.
At the end of the track, Wally and Michael both play solos, in turn.
The original Babys :
Michael Corby - Guitar / Keyboard
Tony Brock - Drums / Background vocals
Wally Stocker - Guitar
John Waite - Vocal / Bass

  • Disgraceful!!!! Depraved!!!

This type of rapine behaviour with a guitar (especially as it was given to me by the late Stevie Marriot,) is completely UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!

    I plead guilty, as charged.

    Aye,

    MC

    His DisGrace, The Corby.

NB: Recorded in1976 (Toronto) 1st Babys album - 1st track.

  • Just great. I remember the band on Supersonic. The original mob with Michael Corby was sensational !:)

  • @stratoman2004 IT IS a very unusual Epiphone & I got it directly FROM Stevie. The issue is clouded as there are other Epiphones (thin solid bodied) that look quite like it & Marriot commonly used one of them in Humble Pie.The thinner Epi may indeed have been stolen but this one was not. I don't touch stolen goods nor do I steal from my pals or anyone else. The guitar was one of the rarest ever made at Gibson but can be identified. Sadly, I can't remember the model name. See: Michael Corby on FB.

  • @stratoman2004 The guitar was changed enormously from what it once was when I got it from Stevie. I then stripped it down & changed it again. However, I then swapped Stratocaster No:L002 for a perfect original of the rare Epiphone that Stevie gave me. It had it's T-shaped Epiphone badge,weird-looking PUps & pots & was sunburst. It was also very obviously Gibson made. I was making our 1st LP in Toronto when we got it from Sam Ash in NY. I then converted it to clone Marriot's as a back-up in black.

  • @stratoman2004 The guitar was as fat-bodied as a Telecaster & the original PUps were unique to it, not P90s. They had no surrounds but had cream plastic only at their ends. The pots were very 50s and also unique in shape, shaped like a circular tent top. The headstock badge would have been the old 'T' shaped Epiphone one & the scratchplate would have been a completely different shape.I will post a photo.of it on my FB site today with Stevie playing it. By then,it had humbuckers, etc..

  • @stratoman2004 Stevie and I knew each other well and I can assure Toby that the guitar was passed directly from his father to me without any mischief. After recording The Babys'.1st LP with it I saw much of Stevie and we actually had an argument. which is documented on my MySpace site, regarding him not being able to remix my album. Hardly likely if I'd stolen one of his axes. Toby is welcome to contact me about this.

  • @The1stBaby I took a close look and it's not a '62 Coronet as far as I can tell...the cutaway shape is not quite the same, the horns are more LP Junior than Epiphone. And admittedly it's a double cutaway but it's also got twin humbuckers which is different from the single P90 that the original had. Also Steve's son Toby is convinced that it got stolen. A mystery indeed. Do you still have the guitar?

  • @stratoman2004 Quick correction - (2nd para):

It is the black DOUBLE cutaway in this video

  • @stratoman2004 I used Stevie Marriot's old Epiphone that he gave me back in1975. It had also belonged to Alvin Lee. Stevie claimed it had belonged to Muddy Waters, too, before Alvin had it. But, Alvin, while admitting it had previously been his, told me Stevie didn't get that information from him. (re:Muddy)

It is the black cutaway in this video but was formerly cherry, when Stevie had it in Humble Pie. There were supposed to 14,made by Gibson, & I had 2 of them which I made look identical. MC.

  • @The1stBaby Which guitar?

  • Thanks! I've never heard this song before, that was great recording. But, it needs more cowbell. ;-)

  • One of my all time favs! I still have the cassette tape!
