This video shows you how to properly set up your Technics 1200 turntables, including leveling, grounding, platter assembly, attaching a cartridge or headshell, and balancing the tone-arm.

This video was originally posted on YouTube as a five-part series (when YouTube had the 10-minute limit on videos) but since those videos had tens of thousands of views, the full version has just been re-uploaded here as a single continuous video, now that the length limits have been removed.

Thanks to Marc Carnes for acting as our guest educator for the video.

I also have some other detailed info about this unit at the following link:

  • I envy you so much

  • There should be NO "trial-and-error" when balancing the tonearm! There is ONE proper way to do it. And when screwing in the counter-weight, you only put how ever many grams your cartridge calls for. It will be in your cartridge instructions.

  • when I say end of tonearm, I mean it screws in behand the counter-weight.

  • That plastic piece that buddy doesn't know what it's for is an overhang gauge for lining up your cartridge. Also, that piece he says is a grounding post is actually an extra weight that goes on the end of the tonearm.

  • lol look at his desktop on his pc @8:23

  • cool

  • @nite1g SO TRUE! I have a pair of 1210mk2's & I'm saving for a pair of Stanton STR8-150's. I love vinyl. Was thinking of getting CDJ's but I'm not going to bother since it's going to be all about midi in a few years. CD's will probably be obsolete but I get the feeling people will still buy vinyl. I know I will anyway. Peace.

  • well whenever i can afford this shit i know im going to end up getting turntables as opposed to CDJ's

but it doesnt seem logical to buy all those vinyls... im going to get serato or traktor or something and use control vinyls

  • Djbolivia this is a great post. To the Idiot (americansmark) who said it ancient to have turntables you should be ashamed to call yourself a DJ. I guess you some poor sap who can't afford them. I have a pair of 1210mk5, pair of Stanton Str8-150 with the rane 68 mixer. You always pay respect to the Dj with turntables cause anybody can use traktor pro with a imac.
