@cpereyra11 I agree completely. It is a crap-shoot. And the doc's know it. They'll just insist you do another and another until they find something. Go figure - you wonder why health care is so expensive?

American Cancer Society's position regarding early detection is "Research has not yet proven that the potential benefits of testing outweigh the harms of testing and treatment. The American Cancer Society believes that men should not be tested without learning about what we know and don’t know about the risks and possible benefits of testing and treatment.

I am not sure who this physician is, however, I would like to have him for my biopsy. He explained everything in a CLEAR and simple manner. Docots who are that clear and precise in EXPLAINING things are usually just as good at what they do. It seemed to be a fair assessment of what one may expect from the procedure. A cautionary note: a recent (Sept/2011) article describes an increase in complications: i.e. hospitalization rates due infections; the guess: increased resistance to antibiotics.

I went through the biopsy procedure and the FUCKING Dr NEVER gave me anything to numb me down even though he swore he would. I was SCREAMING in pain on the table after 20 pieces of my prostate were ripped out. HORRIBLE. My Gleason score was a 9 tho' so out came the prostate gland. I went the Robotic route for surgery. My doctor left his practice right after my surgery and moved to California. I'm only 48 yrs old too. And nerve sparing? Ha. NO feeling, erection, NOTHING. At least I'm alive.

Just got home from my first visit to Urologist, after referral by my PCP. My last 2 PSA's were 2.2 (12/10) and then 2.6 (4/11). As a precaution, PCP referred me to Urologist. I'm now scheduled for biopsy in 3 wks (9/22/11).
Your video is very informative and the information you shared is almost word for word what the Urologist explained to me about this procedure. He stated that my biopsy would be for 12 tissue samples. Thank you.

Very informative, thank you very much!!!

@gchodak1 I've seen a total of 7 doctors for this including 3 Urologist and 2 primary care physicians and 2 ER doctors and I have never received any solid answers for this. Most have simply said that I was "to young" to have prostate cancer. So biopsy was never mentioned. I do believe I have prostititis though because I have the symptoms except I have NO PAIN or burning during urination. And its red constantly throughout the whole stream. The blood loss is what really concerns me.

@gchodak1 I'll be 32 in a few months. My urine has been visibly red for the past 3 years.Nothing was found with even a cystoscopy. Not even signs of infection but I was given antibiotics anyway (cipro) twice before to no avail.I was told I have prostititis because Im always urinating and perhaps had a busted blood vessle down there that was to risky to repair. The problem is now because of this regular blood loss, I have bad anemia and have to take iron regularly but still always tired.
Im allergic to most antbiotics and cipro and levaquen make me insane. I have blood in my urines, all bladder and kidney test negative. What do I do?

@RealityHurts923 Are there no antibiotics that can be taken? Is the urine visible or just seen under the microscope. HOw old are you?
gchodak1 9 months ago
@RealityHurts923 Your problem is certainly unusual but have you seen a nephrologist/urologist. Clearly a more comprehensive evaluation is needed

yabangulum 9 months ago
@yabangulum the odds of having cancer are about 25% unless he has urinary complaints so a biopsy might be needed

I am just shy of 52 years old and have a 5.1 PSA. I have been having some slow streaming in urination with a slight burning. My doctor wants to take 12 samples from my prostate. I am chicken and have a VERY low threshold for pain. If I call YOU in your office can you do the biopsy over the phone if I hold my cell phone near my rectum? (OK, that last part was a joke but the rest is for real - HELP !)

@PhilStellar ask your doctor about taking medication to improve your urination for a month such as flomax and then repeat in one month, if still this high a biopsy is needed but make sure the doctor give you an injection of novacaine to minimize or eliminate the discomfort
