Large Reticulated Rhinoceros Horn 'Squirrels and Grapes' Cup, Late Qing Dynasty
Carved as a tall growth of grape vines and prunus branches coming out of the rocky ground, and supporting a three-tiered lotus cup at the top, the whole inhabited by numerous squirrels. The large black base carefully carved as a mountain landscape with pine trees, double gourds and lingzhi fungus
The squirrel and grape motif is a rebus for longevity. A cylindrical cup also decorated with this theme can be found in Christie's New York 'Selections from the Robert H. Blumenfield Collection' March 25, 2010, lot 808
From the Estate of the late Dr. John Thoburn Williamson, a Canadian geologist who acquired the carving in Hong Kong during the 1950's. Thence by decent within the family
