For most British (or ex British) viewers, Butlin's is so well known that it doesn't need describing, but for those who aren't familiar with the name, Butlin's is a British chain of Holiday Camps, founded in 1936 by Billy Butlin to provide cheap but fun and entertaining holidays. There were eight camps throughout Britain and one in Ireland as well as several Hotels in the UK and the Bahamas. The emphasis was always on entertainment and the camps all feature staff wearing red blazers, famously know as Red Coats. There are now only three Butlin's camps remaining, at Minehead, Skegness and Bognor Regis.

This is a rather fun record from the Trebletones, which would have been sold as a souvenir at a Butlin's holiday camp. It's rather a short song though and the B side features the same tune, but with "Good Morning" replaced by "Good Evening"! I'm not sure when it dates from - I would guess 1960s.

It is played here on my ITT-KB portable stereo player from the 1970s. It has two speakers which clip on the top to form a lid so that whole thing can be carried around. Unfortunately, one of the speakers is faulty, so I have used a pair of suitably ancient "Rank" speakers instead.

I hope you enjoy this, either as a nice unusual advertising record, or if you have ever been to Butlin's, as a nice piece of nostalgia.

  • I remember it from 1965, so the recording is at least that old. I was at Butlins in Minehead and it was piped into the bedroom every morning. I still recall the melody and the words, but this was the first time I have heard it in 46 years!

  • @nicoatridge Thanks for the comment - I'm glad it's brought back memories!

  • @AG3304 Thank you, that is very kind of you indeed!

  • @pyestudiocolour l'll have a look and see if l have one like that. You never know!

  • @AG3304 Hi! Yes it's 16 ohm 7"x4" speaker. I have tried quite a few places, including the Vintage Communicactions fair in May with no luck. I've got a drawer full of various old speakers but none of the correct size!

  • Nice!Too bad about your lTT with its duff speaker.Silly thing is l've probably got one that'd do,l think they're 16 Ohms from memory.

  • @sideshowtink Thanks - I'm glad that you enjoyed it!
