If spending didn't end the Depression why do people say the war did? What was the war? Huge amounts of spending on war. So much so that the US debt to GDP ratio rose to its all-time highest level afterwards. That was followed up with the GI Bill and the interstates and other government spending. The result was a golden age.

If you can't get a job you need another person to give it to you. If the government has decreed as it has over the past 30 years that an army of unemployed is required to keep wages down, then many people will just be out of luck. Right now the government is not adequately addressing the aggregate demand gap because of free market nonsense. The result will be a permanently lower standard of living.
