Here is part of the finale at our fourth annual B-3 Summit during the San Francisco Jazz Festival. It took some hard work but I finally got Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFrancesco to play together. Concord Records then produced a CD called 'Incredible!' with the music recorded that night. I shot this from behind the curtain. It was October 28, 1999. • Hammond organs all sound a bit different from one another and an organist knows when he/she finds an organ that sounds best for them. Some say the mid-sixty B3s sound the best... others prefer the A-100 series for brightness. Some even like the older Hammonds because they often have a 'fatter' bottom end. It's all very subjective. For some reason Jimmy liked that particular organ which is a 1964 model B3.

  • and that was your organ jimmy was playin, wasn't it, pete?

  • Yes, Jimmy always told me to being that particular organ for him

  • Would have LOVED to be there. History here.

  • did I hear them quote "Freddie The Freeloader" in there?

  • Sound quality sucks wind but historic value makes it all O.K. Deedwerksmatters .

  • Jimmy Smith spent a lot of time in Pittsburgh at the Hurricane where his B3 was practically part of the establishment. At that time we also had Dr. Lonnie Smith who played in George Benson's local combo before Jack McDuff discovered George. Jimmy McGriff, Shirly Scott, Gene Ludwig, David "Sugar" Caine & Richard Groove Holmes were all part of our repertoire every night. Groove Holmes didn't play the Hammond on a regularly but the Wurlitzer instead. Rare was the Hammond C3 that all of them played.

  • Cool ending.

Smith threw Joey a curve, but that's exactly what Joey lives for in Smiths presence... something he hasn't heard b/f.

  • and to add to Doodlinlounge's last statement.....Every Leslie speaker (much like every hammond) have their own personalities and feel in sound quality. Heck, I've played B3's i loved and B3's that just didn't feel or sound right to me.......they all have their own unique feel even though they're all built the same......so many variables, that's for sure!

  • @Doodlinlounge What year is Jimmy's B3 from? Why he liked that particular organ ?

  • Too bad that Joey plays a new electronic organ now --- the sound is nothing like a

    vintage B-3 !

  • That's Midnight Special, not All Blues...
