Mr. Ron Capps is a writer and researcher whose work focuses on international relations, global security and human rights. His writing and commentary appear regularly in Time Magazine and Foreign Policy, and have appeared in Monday Developments, Health Affairs, on Pacifica Radio, the BBC World Service and NPR's All Things Considered. He has been a consultant or subject matter expert to Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The Newshour and PBS Frontline. He is the former director of the Partnership for Effective Peacekeeping and of Refugees International's Protection and Security program. Ron served for 25 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve with overseas tours in Germany, Korea, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Mauritania, Chad and Afghanistan; he represented the United States on the African Union's Cease Fire Commission in Darfur. He is a retired Foreign Service officer for the Department of State. As an FSO, Ron served as a deputy director in the Office for Analysis of Africa, intelligence briefer to two Presidential Special Envoys to Sudan, and as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. His overseas assignments included Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Kosovo, Rwanda, Iraq and Sudan. He has has lectured at the Foreign Service Institute, the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, the NATO School, the Carter Center, the Culture Summit ,the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Council on Foreign Relations and the Henry L. Stimson Center. He has received numerous awards and decorations including two Department of State Superior Honor Awards, and two Bronze Star Medals. In 2007, the American Foreign Service Association presented him with the William R. Rivkin award for his creative dissent of U.S. policy in Darfur. Ron holds a Master's Degree from the Johns Hopkins University and did further graduate work at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
