Mitch hired Cass and Frankie in June of 1989 to check out Lucas and his background after Lucas returned to Felicia's life and they began searching for the daughter that was taken from them the night she was born.

What began as a routine stakeout of Lucas's apartment building on the 4th of July 1989 quickly changed into much more for Frankie and Cass, though. For starters, Cass surprised Frankie by showing up (he had previously said he was going to the park to watch the fireworks with his sister Stacey and her then-boyfriend Derek Dane, but he ditched the park at the last minute to join Frankie on the stakeout) with a cold soda for her. When Cass complains about the heat in the car, Frankie tells him to take off his jacket. The first rule of a stakeout is to dress right. When Cass takes off his jacket, a set of keys falls out. Frankie notices the initials "CS" on the keychain and ribs Cass about the keys being from "Miss Down Under," Caroline Stafford. Cass takes the keys from Frankie and tells her that his private life is none of her business. Cass is then impressed when he sees that Frankie has gotten an FBI computer printout on Lucas. Frankie tells him she's no amateur. Cass wants to know how she got the printout, and Frankie asks him if he's always this serious. Cass says people used to wonder if he was ever serious about anything. Frankie finds that hard to believe and asks what Cass used to do that people never thought he was serious. Cass laughs and says, "What didn't we do?" The "we," he goes on to explain, was him, Felicia, and Wallingford, The Three Musketeers. They used to get into the craziest situations. It just happened. Cass says those were great times. Frankie asks how Kathleen fit into that, and Cass wonders how she knows about Kathleen. Frankie fibs that she's heard people talking and she knows Kathleen died (in actuality, Frankie came to Cass's rescue the stormy night that he called off his wedding to Nicole Love, and while he was hallucinating due to a high fever and Frankie was taking care of him as best she could in a broken-down gazebo in the park, the only shelter nearby, all night long, Cass in his fever-induced hallucinatory state saw Kathleen instead of Frankie, and spoke to her as if she were that woman and not Frankie, which is how Frankie REALLY found out, but at this point Cass doesn't know that yet, although he did find out a few weeks later). Cass says that Kathleen understood and became part of the gang, then says he thought he told Frankie that his private life was off limits as a topic of conversation. Frankie says she never asked, she wasn't even listening, and puts the binoculars back to her eyes and goes back to watching Lucas's building.
