Here is a video of Mike Rubenstein playing the Maynard Ferguson solo on "Send in the Clowns" with the Dowling Jazz Orchestra on December 15, 2008 on the campus of Dowling College, Oakdale, New York. The conductor is Prof. Rich Cruz and the piano player is Nick Ambrosino. Ohh, and yes, the third trumpet player completely cacked all over the end of the trumpet solo.

  • Trying to take on that trumpet solo is like trying to karaoke Freddy Mercury. You're just asking to be ridiculed because the original is so distinctive, famous, and totally spot on that the very best you can hope for is to nail it note for note identical in which people will accuse you of being unoriginal.

  • @Duckleft well, how'd I do trying?

  • god the solo was terrible, i know a freshman that can play it better, and actually hit the top note,i can play it too, just cant go past a doube a

  • well, since this solo goes up to a high Bb, we'll just have to wait until you practice enough to hit that note. My guess is you can not hit a high A, maybe a high G, since after you get above a G, the rest of the octave up to double high C pretty much locks in without any major adjustments.

  • Why do you hate Bobby Shew ? Very few people have achieved his level of musicianship and trumpet playing. Plus, he's a nice person. I feel sorry for you.

  • I don't, my comment was directed at his performance of "Maynard Ferguson" on here, where throughout he was playing at a very low standard of quality. He cracked almost every note. He also played it very slowly, which may have done him in, especially if he was tired, depending on where that clip fit during the actual performance. If you watch, it's not a stretch to say that performance sucked.

  • Sorry not a Maynard Ferguson solo. John Harner did the recording on this if I'm not mistaken.

  • @trane1959 Thin tone and out of tune.....other than that, it was a nice try.

    Better luck next time :o)

  • @trane1959 at double G I can easily go to A, but when i try to go to Bb I end up going back down to F, so yeah

  • @dlc0001 excuse me, being lead trumpet in Jazz ensemble and Wind Ensemble in my high school as a sophomore, i'm pretty sure i know what I am talking about

  • @guitarhero31333

    Stick to guitar hero

  • Nice job on the high stuff. I think the poster was referring to the 3rd trumpet hanging over with an out of tune at the end of the lead trumpet solo.

  • trickg1's got it. John is in the Dayton OH area leading the great Dayton Jazz Orch. Everyone do yourself a favor and go get the Stan Kenton,"Street of Dreams" cd. Put it in the player-which is hooked up to 1000 watt amp and vintage Altec speakers of-course , crank it and BE THERE! No, don't down load the mp3 and listen to it with $20 ear buds. Find someone who has a good sound system and get goose bumps. Oh for those under 20 a cd is a shinny disk disk with music on it
