Labor Day 2007 - 50th Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk

The 50th Annual Bridge Walk began at 7 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 3 2007. Since 1958, thousands of walkers have crossed the Michigan landmark each year creating a memorable and scenic tradition. Walkers begin the five-mile trek in St.Ignace and cross the finish line in Mackinaw City.

The pedestrians were dwarfed by the 552 foot towers as they enjoyed a dramatic view of the water -- some 199 feet below.

Some 57,000 people walked, jogged or wheeled across the 5-mile span.

Prior to the walk, Michican Gov. Granholm lead a select group of 300 runners across the bridge in conjunction with hte Governor's Council on Physical Fitness (GCPF). The early-morning GCPF event will take place as a way to promote the importance of exercise and physical fitness for people of all ages.

A new twist for 2007 attracted more than 50 swimmers to attempt to cross the 56-degree waters of the Straits -- one-by-one. Ultra-marathon athlete and Great Lakes swimmer Jim Dreyer organized the unique and inspiring swim as a fundraiser for Mentor Michigan, an organization geared toward supporting and enhancing mentoring programs for Michigan's youth.

The inaugural walk took plack on June 25, 1958, when Michigan Gov. G. Mennen "Soapy" Williams led about 60 over the bridge under rainy conditions.
