I finally made it out to the legendary watermelon thump in Luling, Tx. I've know about this annual festival for years, and Docubloggers was the perfect excuse to take part in the thump. I'm telling a half truth -- I didn't actually "take part" in the watermelon seed spitting contest or drown myself in the watermelon eating contest. But trust me, after filming and editing all of the various footage of watermelon eating, spitting, and eating and spitting -- you will feel watermeloned out!
Since 1954, Luling has held the Watermelon thump during the last Thursday through Sunday in June. And it's one of the hottest times of year making watermelon appeal to the senses even more. The people of Luling honor the watermelon crop with a watermelon parade featuring the elected watermelon queen, live music until 1 am each evening, a carnival, food, beer and of course the contests.
The contests are a huge part of the festival tradition. In 1962, the biggest watermelon was auctioned off weighing 80 pounds and 8 ounces. In 1981, the Guinness World Record was set for the furthest watermelon seed spit, which was recorded at 65 feet and 4 inches. This really is a long spit compared to the champion of the 2008 contest, which came to about 39 feet. People say that wind and the way you spit the seed factors into the distance. Maybe back in 1981 it was a pleasantly breezy and cooler day compared to this past festival's hot and still weather.
In this docublog, you'll see all the different elements that make the festival, but the seed spitting and watermelon eating contests will make your jaw drop. Folks travel from all over Texas to participate. You'll never think of a watermelon in quite the same way after seeing this docublog....

Hey Y'all....send me a bite of that watermelon. I haven't had a "sweet" delicious watermelon since I left Texas. They pick them way too early here in the state I currently live (which will remain nameless because someone may get mad.) I don't think they really know when they're ripe over here.
