what the ****? when i try to activate the elevator is breaks. and then u hear some dramatic music. how can i fix this?????

That's the wrong elevator. It breaks on everyone. I think I avoided that room completely, because I knew where it was. The next elevator you eventually find will take you up. Just go back to just before you go in the room with the elevator that breaks and find the same spot in the walkthrough you'll see what to do, if you still have trouble.
