How to straighten wooden longbow arrows

The basic method of straightening bent wooden arrows using steam to soften the wood, please be careful when using steam.

You can employ this method without the help of steam/heat, the effects do not last as long and some VERY bent arrows will need heating.

Does this method only work on 'bare' arrows or will it work if they are oiled or waxed?

@SvenDreyriAx Well, as I dont oil or wax my arrows I cant say for sure, it will still heat the arrow allowing you to fix the bend but you will probably find you need to re-wax after steaming.

Hi, I know this is old, but by any chance you or anyone can help i'd be greatful.

I have bamboo arrows, they shoot great but they have natural bends at the knots, this doesn't effect the arrow in flight, but when they get bent, their very hard to straighten and seem to bend very easy after that, So can they be straightened and keep the straightness or do I have to bin them?

Hi,

As we make Longbows we tend to only use bamboo for the bow backing not arrow making, it tends to be used for arrows in Eastern Archery, I have no experience of trying to straighten a Bamboo Arrow, sorry!

I'm certainly interested in getting an English Longbow, but here in the US I can't find a good store to find one

I don't suppose you know of a website perhaps where I could find a genuine longbow?

For anyone is looking to purchase an English Longbow or a Warbow, then it is better to have a Traditional English Bowyer, like Richard, to make one to your requirments, because I feel that you have a better chance of getting a top quaklity bow for your money :) Willie
