Working with your board at a more acute angle will help you with ink flow and give you better contrast between 'thicks' and 'thins'.
Experimenting with ink consistency is another area to examine.
Ink sold as 'calligraphy ink' does not always have the best flowing quality
desired to produce good letters. Gouache is a good medium to use and much less expensive than the so-called calligrapy ink bought from art shops. Buy artist's grade as this will give you greater covering power - more pigment.
