(Robertson) from the album "The Band - Music from Big Pink" (1968)

- The Weight -

I pulled in to Nazareth, was feeling 'bout half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head
``Hey mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?''
He just grinned and shook my hand, ``No'' was all he said

Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And you put the load right on me

I picked up my bag, I went looking for a place to hide
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walking side by side
I said ``Hey Carmen, come on, let's go downtown''
She said ``I gotta go but my friend can stick around''

Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And you put the load right on me

Go down Miss Moses, there's nothing you can say
It's just old Luke, and Luke's waiting on the judgement day
``Well, Luke my friend, what about young Anna-Lee?''
He said ``Do me a favour son, won't you stay and keep Anna-Lee company?''

Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And you put the load right on me

Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog
He said ``I will fix your rack if you'll take Jack my dog''
I said ``Wait a minute Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man''
He said ``That's okay boy, won't you feed him when you can?''

Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And you put the load right on me

Catch a cannonball now to take me down the line
My bag is sinking low and I do believe it's time
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone

Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And you put the load right on me

  • What's the tuning?

  • Eb (Standard tuning but down a semi-tone)

  • Nice job. But the song is in A. Why does everyone play it in G? Again, very smooth.

  • Thanks. Too high in A for me, I'm playing it in F#.

  • Very cool .. great voice and the sound of your guitar playing is masterful. What kind of guitar?... it really pumps the base.. sweet warm sound

  • Thanks. It is a Washburn. I would be happier with something nicer but like upgrading a spouse it can be expensive!

  • @palbolt Good answer....some people try to sing a song in the exact same key and it sounds horrible because they can't sing any of the notes. This sounds terrific. Much better than most versions in the key of A!

  • Fantastic version. Your vocals are spot on!

  • @palbolt you mean Gb :P

  • loved your cover i have added it to my favorites great voice and guitar playing do you play live anywhere near Pittsburgh PA would love to see you play!

  • good job Man

  • ah men.... and what about try metronom? your tempo is really variety

  • This is really well done, congrats dude. Like the way you've editted it to your own voice style.

  • @fortthewayne

Probably because that descending A-G#-F riff sounds nicer when you do the G-F#-Em shapes.

  • Very nicely done.

  • no wonder i sounded off hahaha
