I worked in the prop shop for 22 years(before the J's) and the damage can be irreparable. The prior solid aluminum blades would actually delaminate at the grain boundaries from the the rain impact and electrolisis. The new blades are composite, don't know how well they hold up. That was the run before this one. It was because they were afraid the plane may have been damaged by the graupel. Fortunately, there was no damage, but it is good to take precautions especially with such an intense storm.

What i wonder is how do the propellers not get damaged hitting hail that is flying around at 175mph.

Lightning typically happens in storms rapidly intensifying. This was near peak intensity - at this point the winds were 175 mph.
