The song "The Hollywood Role" by Scottish singer-songwriter Ali Thomson from his 1980 debut LP, Take a Little Rhythm.

Ali Thomson, born in Glasgow, is the younger brother of Supertramp bass guitarist, Doug Thomson.

The album Take A Little Rhythm was released by A&M Records and featured the top-40 radio hit single "Take A Little Rhythm." The second single, "Live Every Minute", charted below the top-40.

This song was notable for being unusually critical of religion for its time, this was very rare for pop music released in the early 1980's.

This is a somewhat quiet track so you may need to turn your volume up.

LYRICS:
Coming from the kingdom
stand by the altar
worship a belief we've all been sold
crying in the darkness, whisper by your bed
as you hope and pray
for the easy way

Hey mister, they're telling your story
Hey sister, they're singing your song
Oh Jesus, when they ask for your soul
Tell them you're playing for the Hollywood role

Now love is a truth,
there's no sacred illusion
Forgiving is easy
if we'd all find the time
too much confusion
losing the rhythm
Down on the street
the meaning has gone

Too much confusion (Too much!)
Losing the rhythm (Losing the rhythm!)
Down on the street
The meaning has gone
the meaning has gone
the meaning has gone
