Depending on what country the competitors come from, most shooters at this level are part of their countries National Team and either fully funded or at least supplimented. Communist countries have always taken care of their competitors needs. In the US we have many of our shooting competitors are in the Military so the cost is not prohibitive for them, others are civilians and are funded through shooting organizations.
Thanks for your reply, looking back on it that makes much sense. Seemed like such an odd thing to no one whos seen the competitions before. I will keep watching, hopefully I can get into this someday. Thanks again
@cv05c The shooter is using a carbide lighter to blacken the metal sights. The smoke from the carbide lighter gives the sighter a truly "Blacken" apprearance and therefore a more defined sight picture for the shooter. I shot high power rifle competition and we also used the same technique...our lighters were old Coal Miner carbide lighters.
In this video I noticed one of the shooters takes a lighter to his sights, which ive also seen in other competitions for air pistol. Can anyone explain why this is done?

my neighbor told me why they do this; it is interesting the things one learns from gun buffs.
