  • USMC 2000-2008 here, also fluent in Russian. Similarly to Davidka, I'm disappointed with the quality of acting and the historical inaccuracies.

  • @Davidka1978Xoroshiy IMHO, films only exist to show us things identical to the way they really are/were. That's the whole gist of the artform, and the way to show that you're an intelligent viewer is to point out the differences between a film and reality. That shows that you get it. That you know your stuff.

  • @WolfhoundMercenary to add to my last post. If the authors of the movie had a goal to accurately portray people , they could read the volumes of personal letters, direct phone talks recorded over coded telegraph... soldiers would look very different i think. story would be different.

  • @WolfhoundMercenary I was in US Army/USAR 2007-2011

i cited my sources for my opinion is based on, and you just give an opinion and call me names.

History should be treated as science. Movies like this combine heersay, stereotypes with actual historic events are not good for people, country and international relations. A responsible approach would be to take a unit combat journal, and follow that. Statistics of losses, places of battle, directives would all be there.

  • @Borsodi90 i'd call you an idiot, but i read Dostoyevsky's 'idiot', and you do not sound like him. :-)

  • @WolfhoundMercenary Yes, i am "expecting" discipline. About penal units' makeup, you may want to read some books that use docs of that era(in russian) or better yet, docs themselves. There is some good material on penalty units in iremember.ru and Pilitsin's books.(Memoirs long aftr events)

I also read a good number of documents(fluent RU), looked at casualty records. I also served in the military and ...that is what my opinion is based on.What about you. ;-)

  • @Davidka1978Xoroshiy It's a freaking movie.

And you are seriously expecting that PENATLY battalions maintained a hard discipline when they were made out of criminals and deserters?

It's not inexcusable, it's just your opinion, so please don't pose as it's some sort of a fact. ;)

  • acting in this melodrama sucks. these people have no idea what soldiers are like, and how people talk to each other in battle and out of it. clearly civilians put it together.

this is a non-historic film, with a whole lot of stories put together. with a lot of research going on on ww2 russian war effort going on now, this is inexcusable.

got very high ratings due to "controversial" collage.

  • First off, i heard about this multi-series film, watched segments of it, like this one, and studied penal battalions using books written by its members and documents that are pouring out of russian archives.
