This is a great song, I learnt from the sining of Pete Coe, who I happen to think is the most consumate folk performer on these isles and I am not just saying that, cause he lives a few miles away from me. I remember seeing him a few years ago at Warwick folk festival, he played three sets in a day and never repeated a song. He played banjo, appilation dulcimer, melodian and bouzouki. Note and word perfect throughout all three performances. This is a great song, but inversley it reminds me of true story of this woman who set this bloke ten tasks before she would marry him and this bloke goes away and actually achieves the ten tasks, they were fairly simple things, like getting a letter published in The Times etc, and after he had completed the tasks, she said OK I will marry you, and he turned round and said, he wouldn't marry a woman who set him so many hurdles.. there's an echo of this in the song.. or am I just been cynical.
Ooh I really enjoyed this!

Pete Coe's version is wonderful, but this is a very gentle take on it, I like.
Have you listened to the version by Magpie Lane?

Very perceptive.. Pete lives a few miles down the road. I learnt it from his version and put my own stamp on it.. of sorts!. He has a fantastic repertoire. Do you have a link to Magpie Lane? Thanks Mike
