It's surprising how many people don't realize (or are mislead about) just how dynamic the atmosphere is, and how much atmospheric conditions play a role in whether condensation occurs or not, and how long it lasts. Granted, jet trails arn't just water vapor, being combustion by-products and such, but visible trails pretty-much are, which is especially obvious when "clouds" grow from them over time; where is the extra material coming from? Pretty obvious to me - it was already there! :-)

Great example of how contrails can persist just like NASA describes. Look it up.
