A district in Istanbul hopes to set a world record with an iftar dinner for 40 thousand people Saturday evening.Esenler municipality set up three rows of tables stretching for over six miles along Atisalani Avenue for their iftar dinner.
Iftar is a traditional dinner during Ramadan to break the day-long fast.
Last year, the municipality hosted an iftar dinner for 15 thousand people, and this year officials hope to get into the Guinness World Book of Records.
People began gathering at the tables early afternoon in preparation for the dinner.
The municipality distributed 10 tons of rice, 8 tons of meat, 15 hundred trays of baklava, 100 thousand bottles of water, and 45 thousand cups of the yogurt-based ayran and juice.
Some attendees also brought their own iftar dinner from home.
