Citizens Against Longwall Mining (C.A.L.M.) express concerns about efforts to mine coal from under their properties in Montgomery County, Illinois. The central and southern part of the state is rich with coal that is now being sought by coal companies. Longwall mining will cause the land to drop by 4 - 6 feet, thus destroying the productivity of some of the richest farmland in the world.

  • @M1A1able Add to that the mines hire companies like the one I work for to fix longwall subsidence from longwall mining so that farmers CAN STILL grow crops on it . You wanna talk about polluting waterways? Well I guess the farmers need to stop spraying herbicides and pesticides because that leaches into the ground and waterways just as badly as anything the mine produces. Deer Run is supposed to bring 150-200 excellent paying jobs to Hillsboro.....

  • im guna tell you somthing.... i worked at monterey coal company... you farmers talk about how bad it is.. but 90% of the people who work in these mines around illinois are famers... company ppl, union people.. all famers.. and wait until your kids get old enough to get a job, and need to work for $ 20 n hour ... heres a good thing... go underground and work there yourself and see how it is.. see what its like before you talk... .. people make me sick.
