Beautiful...draft horses never fail to amaze me. I'm just shocked at how many people hate seeing them work...sigh...I suppose they expect horses should be idle. Just as the majority of the human population is.

One of the nicer pulls I've seen. When I say "nicer"-I mean the way their owner is treating them. I've seen some hotdog stuff at the fairs in Ohio where I'm from. My farrier breeds Belgians and has told me horror stories of uncaring owners who use up their horses in pulls and toss them aside when they get bad shoulder injuries. I guess it can be said of any equine sport-there are bad owners and good owners. But this looked good to me.

Agreed. What i love seeing is how they pace righ before and how ridiculously eager they are to do this which just shows how much they enjoy it :)

Draft horses are beautiful...if you've ever seen one in real life you can understand how they can pull that much...two of them can weigh over a ton by themselves! They're HUUUUGE!
The animals look happy and well cared for. Much better looking than in rodeos.

It almost makes me cry how hard the horses try. They could just barely make it, and they put everythign they had into it! Great horses!

Hey, I live in Iowa!
This was D&D's first pull together - Duke (the blond) had never pulled at a competition before - Dan (the brunette) had. If you look thru Duke's legs you can see that Dan just leans into the load and walks forward, as Duke kind of "jumps" against it. Today, they both simply lean into it together and walk away with it.

Notice how Jack never strains to pull them into control, doesn't even snap the reins to get them started. He just makes a kissing noise, and they pull. Jack loves his horses and never makes them strain beyond what they can pull without hurting themselves.

pretty tight quarters for a horse pull,
equiner7 4 years ago 5
they only have to pull the sled 15 feet to complete the pull.

This was at Kalona? I'm near Solon! Is this an annual competition? I'd go for sure.

yes it is annual - followed by the auction on the following day. most of the horses are being shown for what they can do. these are real farm animals, not just pullers for pulling's sake.
