This is the original mini-opera version of the ten minute musical THE OEDIPUS COMPLEX, that was subsequently optioned by theater legend Joseph Papp and expanded into a ten minute musical. The animation was done to storyboard the theatrical version, and later trimmed for this shorter, if more lively and rock and roll oriented number.

I wrote the book and lyrics, and did all the art and animation. The music was composed by Linda Edlund, who also played every instrument and sang every part on this recording, back in the days when instruments were real and tangible. I suppose art once was real, as well, but again, I did this animation to create a storyboard and show how the musical would play on a stage, not to win any design awards.

The complete version, with five singers, a fuller story and a lot more about the history of the piece, can also be found on this site. More information about my life and work can be found at www.starrplay.com. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy.

  • wow that's great. Yeah i wanna download this song too.

  • yer, this is pretty nice work.

  • Where can I download the song?

  • Very catchy tune, witty lyrics. Great concept.

  • What a beautiful song! I love the melody and the harmony here, and the lyrics are truly brilliant. So nice to be reminded of this classic tale in a pseudo-modernistic way. I would've loved to have seen the rock opera live. I actually like the voice even more on this version than the updated, theatrical version, though they are both equals in artistic and lyrical form.

  • A faithful retelling of the Oedipus story in the vernacular! Absolutely wonderful lyrics and captivating use of early animation program (pre-Flash).
