Chicago, IL -- The American Mustache Institute held it's sixth installment of 'Stache Bash' in the nation's most mustache friendly city...Chicago!
The Halloween event saw over 500 hairy lip fans stroll into Joe's Bar on Weed to dance to the sounds of Chicago's Flavor Savers.
But most importantly witness the crowning of one of the most prestigious American awards...The 2011 Mustached American of the Year!
Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford was highly qualified for this honor. His National League leading 46 saves led his squad to the NL Championship Series for the first time in 29 years.
Axford, who sports a menacing Fu Manchu-style mustache, won the award with more than half of all the 1,000,000 votes cast online. His win demonstrates the power of his social media presence: more than 35,000 Twitter followers frequently read about lip sweater topics.
Axford won despite being a Canadian citizen; the nomination committee deliberated over his entry, but Axford's legal representatives were able to prevail by citing Robert Goulet's Canadian birth.
The event kicked off Movember, the global moustache-growing charity campaign raising awareness and funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation known as LIVESTRONG.
