The Monastery of Saint Macarius in Egypts ancient Scetes desert is one of the oldest monasteries in the world. When it was founded in 360 by Saint Macarius of Egypt, over four thousand monks of varying backgrounds flocked to the site to learn from the holy mans spiritual tutelage...
In 1969, at the request of the Coptic Orthodox Pope Cyril VI, Father Matta El Meskeen and ten other hermit monks who had lived in the desert for several years gave new life to this high place of monasticism, which has been in uninterrupted service since the day it was founded. When he arrived, the community housed no more than half a dozen elderly monks.
Since then, the monastery has been largely restored and rebuilt and has undergone relentless development. Its influence has extended across Egypt, even beyond national borders. Today, the community has a population of 110 monks. Hermit life has started up again in the desert, crop and animal farms have sprouted up in the region, orchards have been planted. The desert has come back into bloom...
