Behind the Beats - Recording "Hate" - James Higgins

Here's a little glimpse into the recording of drums for "Hate", the song that will likely be Track 1 on the finished album. It was a long day, but as you can see we had lots of laughs, and the hard work paid off with a really hot drum sound!

Ruwan Sena - Engineer, Co-Producer
Todd Byrnes - Drumming talent
Caleb Sullivan - Assistant Engineer
Coffee Machine - survival assistant

We recorded these drums only using four microphones - Kick drum (sm57), Overhead (Neumann TLM103), Side mic (Beesknees "Sally"), and a hallway mic for natural reverb effect (Carillon ribbon mic). The hallway mic seemed to capture the full force of Todd's hits on the drums, something that I've never achieved so realistically before in recording sessions.

very interesting mic positioning on the kit. also an SM57 on kick? not a shure beta 52a?

@sammybakermusic Gotta think out of the box Sammy. Everyone will tell you which mics are supposed to used for which instruments... but at the end of the day, your ears are the boss. The sm57 created the sound we were after on the kick drum, so there it is!
