  • do they have a tractor style axle on the front with no springs but a pivot type thing in the middle

  • Yup, the front axle is driven though, supported by a large A-frame which extends rearwards along the chassis. There is a single spring which runs widthways along the length of the front axle, and obviously the centre pivot as you described.

  • Absolutely 100 sure!

Its a 10.5 litre straight 6 Meadows petrol engine, 180bhp (on a good day!.

as it drives past you can see the air inlet for the twin carburretors.

Admittedly it sounds a bit like a diesel, partly due to the film quality (taken on a handheld camera) and also because the engine is actually based on a diesel lump.

Meadows lowered the compression and did various other things to it to make it run on petrol!

    Hope that answers your question..

  • very impressive. unusual to see one still with a meadows, they were very thirsty and most got replaced with gardners or o.680s

  • Development of the Pioneer 6 x 4 with a more powerful petrol engine - the Meadows 6PC630 of 130 mm x 130 mm & 10,35 litres. Rated at 175 bhp gross at 2,400 rpm, so much more powerful that the 6LW at 102 bhp at 1,700 rpm, and much better gear changing. Made as a tank recovery vehicle with Scammell vertical-spindle winch, a tank transporter with low-ratio double-reduction diff, capable of 16 mph at 52 tons gross. Honest ! Hardly a sports motor. Magic in cross-country, when others are bogged down!

  • Believe it or not I have a new (yes, new!) radiator for one of these...

  • Wow! We've got one of these at work as a recovery vehicle (MoD Boscombe Down) and as far as I've been told it is completely original. I've even had the pleasure of driving it. Awesome machine. I never realised it was quite so capable off road mind but then again I beleive these things were used to recover broken tanks.

  • At first sight with the classy fenders I didn't think it was going to be a truck with those capabilities.

  • wow!!!!!!

  • no its not a diesel athought people put in gardern diesels in i used to do this in a exsplorer when and where is the next trial thanks

  • I will trade my 2005 GU Nissan Patrol anyday for one of these babies
