The Baumwoll's
Yosef Baumwoll is in america, as of 1910.
My grandfather Nathan Baumwoll is met Oct 31, 1910 he is 13 years old. On Dec 22, 1910, His mother Beile (bella Baumwoll and her 4 daughters Adela, Fela, Anna, & Ceila. They also have an older brother Samuel Baumwoll the oldest of them all. He came a year later. They all came from Antwerp, Belgium. This is there last residence before leaving for America. They all come from Warsaw Russia. I have no idea where or what happen to all of them. I have no real photos of them I do not know where they are buried. The Simlovitz's is my grandmothers family rich with history . In these photos my great grandmother and grandfather . Harry & Ida Smilovitz and their four daughters. Esther, Eva, Celia, Sadie and their brothers Samuel, Irving and Moe. The photo of the family on the boardwalk is my family . I am the one in the stroller. This all began as I began to look for my great grandmother and great uncle as I was named after them. Our beach 34th street house and the beach38th street and other spots around Far Rockaway and Edgemere.
There once was a place called Edgemere Long Island. My goal with this video is to capture as many memories from the people that called Edgemere a part of there lives along with as many photos of the streets and its many views; from Edgemere Ave. and all its stores and stories; to the vendors on the boardwalk and their truly amazing stories; to all the summer boarders who took the town over for those few summer months. And most of all to the families like mine who had one of those great old big houses for all those summer folks and city folks to rent for the summer. Our house was one house from the boardwalk on Beach 38th Street and Sprayview Avenue.
I can't explain my love for this place but it is profound. I am only one person in one family from this once wonderful place. All that I wish to do here is to remember and dream again of this place and its times and its people and streets.
I was trying to find my grandfathers family and I realized that I knew nothing. Since my quest has begun to find where my great grandmother and great grandfather are buried, I have come to understand that my grandfather was a young man when he got to America. In 1910 he was 13. By age 15 he is working for one of the pioneers of the movie industry Jacob Fabin. He is one of the boys that stood there and turned the film. I have since found out that he made films. I have a few. He brought some of his films home when he was still living with his mother and sisters so I have a feeling they still exist somewhere.
I am looking for those films. My grandfather went on to become a man that they wrote about. They compared him to the great Blasco who was one of the great Theater impresarios of the early century. When I was young I saw a newspaper article about my grandfather comparing him to Blasco. He was one of the men that put the sound in the Roxy Movie Palace in New York in 1927. He worked his whole life as a film projectionist.
My great grandparents Bella (who was formerly Beile) and Yosef Baumwoll and all their children came to America in 1910. Their oldest son Samuel came the following year. I am looking for the sisters and brother to my grandfather Nathan. They are; Anna, Helen (who was formerly known as Adela), Sadie (formerly Ceilia), Fannie (formerly Fela) and Samuel. In my genealogy search, I haven't been able to find where all these children from the brothers and sisters of my grandfather are.
My grandfather's sister Anna Baumwoll married William Lomberg around 1920. They had three children. Their children were Jeannette, Joseph and Natalie Lamberg. Anna was 24 years old and William was 36. We were told through family stories that they had the concession for and ran the Carousel in Central Park.
Most of what you have just read I myself has just recently discovered. I am now working on trying to find my grandfathers' youngest sister Saide (formerly known as Ceila). What I know of her now is that she was a Jewelry Designer and she died sometime in the early 1950s. I was told she came to my older brothers' Jewish briss in 1948. I have no idea what happened to her or where she is buried. I know she lived in the Bronx and much of her life was spent in Edgemere and that she was the youngest sister to my grandfather and they were quite close. I know there must be photos out there and this too is part of the quest.
So my quest is still the same. Who is my fathers family? Where are they? What happen to them all?
Peace
Bruce Baumwoll

Bravo Bruce! What a wonderful job you did in capturing an era...brought a tear to my eye...Echos of my own family album.
In fact I am pretty sure your great granddad was my grandads brother. The photo at :11 The Baumwoll ears. Same at 1:06 and 1:09 Ears and front teeth...my dad's features. Now, does anyone in your family have a "shnider's" thumb?
My folks were in Brooklyn.

I must say how this touched me.
My father was raised in Arverne, and my grandparents used to own a bar and grill on Beach 35th Street ("Sam's Bar"). Although I was two when we moved to O'Side, I still feel drawn to my roots. When I saw your postcard you have of Beach 35th Street, I welled-up..
I went there last summer, and took photos of a place that I feel akin to. The ghosts of lives’ past and the families that lived thethem still haunt those empty lots.
Today, I needed this. :)
