DigInfo - http://movie.diginfo.tv - Conventional RFID tags are starting to be used for tracking objects such as luggage, freight and library books. Oki Electric have developed special RFID tags which can be embedded with multiple sensors to measure anything from temperature and humidity to pressure and light. "The ideal use of these sensors are in the construction of buildings, bridges and roads. They can used to aid in the management and maintenance of these structures." Unlike the more common active RFID sensors which require batteries, these passive sensors are powered by the RFID reader and don't require an internal power source. "Basically, when you place the RFID tag reader writer over the sensor, the reader transmits a signal which generates electricity, the electricity is stored in a capacitor in the RFID sensor which is then used to transmit the information from the sensor to the reader. The electricity is also used to light up the LED lamp to show that the sensor is active." Hundreds of pressure sensor tags can be placed in the walls of a structure such as a building or on a bridge during construction, if the structure is exposed to stress, such as during an earthquake, the tags in the wall can be scanned and the areas which are no longer structurally sound and therefore unsafe, can be identified quickly. They have recently developed the worlds smallest RFID sensor which works with interchangeable sensors for different applications. "This is the worlds smallest RFID tag containing a sensor with a diameter of 8 mm. Information can be transmitted using the small antennae within 10 cm and the larger one can transmit information to about 30 cm." With the temperature sensor attached and kept within range of the reader, in this case a metallic strip, it can be used to monitor the condition of perishable goods during transportation.
