At the beginning of World War II, the Germans relied heavily on the Junkers Ju 87, a two-seat attack plane called the Stuka (short for Sturzkampflugzeug, dive bomber). It was most effective as a ground-attack weapon, doing a steep dive with a special wind-driven siren shrieking to strike terror in ground-bound targets. It was cool-looking, with inverted gull wings and fixed landing gear, and it did well for a while, But then came England. The Stuka was too slow and too lightly armed to compete with the Spitfires. So many Stukas were shot down that it was eventualy sent to the Russian campaign to attack tanks. For music we have "Das Stuka Lied" ("The Stuka Song"), which begins "We are the black Hussars of the sky, The Stukas, the Stukas, the Stukas!"

  • alot of stuka pilots took the siren mechanism off because it increased drag and slowed the plane down by ten or twenty knots, but they also fitted a very quick tubing on the ends of bomb fins so they also would screech like hell after being launched by the stuka, Pretty cool eh?

  • He, heh. Cool, indeed! @germaniajim

  • Not exactly what i call "Art". but nice

  • It isn't really classic art, zookatone, but it is war art. And only time will tell whether any of the individual paintings are considered true "art.' Maybe.

  • Thank you, whoever you are, for your great contribution to today's artworks!

Stroking a couple of paint brushes with cow dung isn't exactly Michaelangelo's backalley!!!

  • Thank you, Grumpypant! I'm just a guy who has always loved planes and flying, and so I used the art as an excuse to gather the images. There are lots of these on my website, if you're a true fan of warplanes.

    Cheers, John

  • Great link; many pics I've never seen before! Vielen Dank!!

  • these are very great stuka pictures 13 stars here :)

  • The Stuka was a beautiful weapon of war.

  • I also like Stuka art, well actually I paint war scenes, I might make some money, I might not, but those planes are screaming to be painted , ya know?

  • Im sure bestjonbon knows this already but wathing all the vids made for Heinz Migeod are simply astounding, the people hes met , like Kesselring, Rommel, Marseille, Rall , even Rudel. He was a very good Stuka pilot who survived the war only to meet the guy who shot him down twenty or so years later. Truly rewarding.
