There they lay in the wreckage
By the side of the road
She was cheating on me
And I didn't know
The girl that I love
And some other man
Even in death
Holding cold, cold hands
On the ground, there lay branches
Broken off of the tree
Broken and bent
Like this heart within me
This is too much
For my sad heart to stand
They left this world
Holding cold, cold hands
Now, I stand by the highway
Viewing what has occurred
Why should the Lord
Take a woman like her?
What will I do
With this solid gold band?
I can't place it
On her cold, cold hand
What will I do
With this solid gold band?
I can't place it
On her cold, cold hand

I think that this song is THE greatest country song ever recorded. It's got everything.....cheatin', tragedy, sorrow, lamenting, regret. This is also, in my opinion, one of Johnny's best vocal performances. Also notice the very understated fills that are played after the key change; it puts full focus on the lyrics and Johnny's impeccable singing. Long live Johnny Bush!
