Separation of church and state is a concept in the constitution, without the the phrase- like the Electoral College, Executive Order, Judicial Review, and the right to privacy.

Unfortunately, tyranny does enter the system- there is a long history of people abusing the government and it still happens today, anywhere in the US it could happen.
