BNSF 4531 Leads The H-KCKDEN West, 5-1-09

I got the urge to go to Newton today and see what was going on. I was there for about an hour just driving around and then I went to the yard and caught the KCKDEN going West thru the yard for a crew change, then after it left Newton I raced it 30 miles back to Hutch where I caught it again at Broadacres Rd.

Being from Maine, I don't recognize those short black cars behind the engines. What are they, and what to they haul?

Up here, rail joints are the norm, and welded rail is less used. To me, it sounds strange to hear the sound of welded rail. I am sure it will become more popular with time up here.
