You're basically reimplementing LyX or TeXmacs here, I'm not sure there's much of a point doing so.

Well:

1) I am having fun doing it

2) This doesn't require TeX

3) It's a much, much simpler program

4) It already supports niceties such as TT fonts, which with TeX are a pain.

But mostly reason 1 ;-)

Oh, and I forgot a very important reason: this is a reusable widget, not a whole application!

@AngaloPapeteri For general users TeX is overkill. If you want to write a simple essay then using this or rst2pdf or something similar is much more easier.
