Footage of the demolition of the Portishead Radio receiving station in Highbridge, Somerset, 2007. In its day the largest maritime radio station in the world, now just a distant memory.
Worked GKB almost on a daily basis while sailing on Niarchos tankers between 1973 and 1986. Excellent station. Very professional. Could be contacted from almost anywhere in the world apart from the middle of the pacific ocean!
Wast a sparks at sea from 1970 to 86 so I worked GKA many many times. Only time I went there was to take a Radio Hams morse test, at the back end of the 70s.
This is for sure very sad ... once the greatest morse coast station in the whole world being reduced to rubble.
This is so sad. They should have at least kept the original old building and made it into a museum or something. As of today (2010) you can still see the whole site on Google maps satellite view. Must be from just before the demolition.
Portishead was something so special. So much history there.
Sad video. You can imagine this site in it's heyday... bustling with radio operators and communications. Back in the days where communicators had real skill.
It's all gone now. The world is worse for it, and things will never be the same.

Very sad to see it gone. The end of an era.

I was at Portishead briefly in the late 60’s.
