Taylor smiled at me. "Real life is a funny thing, you know? In real life saying the right thing at the right moment is beyond crucial. So crucial in fact that most of us start to hesitate for fear of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. But lately, what I've begun to fear more than that is letting the moment pass without saying anything. I think you deserve to look back at your life without this chorus of resounding voice that's saying I could have but it's too late now. So there's a time for silence and there's a time for waiting your turn. But if you know how you feel and you so clearly know what to say...you'll know it. I don't think you should wait. I think you should speak now."
I looked up at Taylor and smiled. "You're right. I'll find him and I'll talk to him."
That night, after dinner I took off to go see Nick at his apartment. My heart was beating like crazy as I rang the doorbell. Zac opened the door. His eyes grew big when he saw me. "Hey," he said hesitantly looking confused all of a sudden.
"Hi," I said. "What's up?"
"Good. How are you?" he asked.
"I'm okay," I replied.
"Who is it?" I heard Nick say from their living room. My heart rate sped up again. And I looked at Zac sadly.
"Um...," said Zac, clearing his throat. "I think it's for you, Nick." Zac walked away from the door and Nick appeared moments after. His eyes grew just like Zac's and turned confused again.
"Hi?" Nick said.
"Hey," I said. My voice shook as I played with my scarf. "Can we talk?"
"I'm kinda in the middle of eating," he said. My face fell and I could feel my tears coming already. I almost gave up but then I remembered what Taylor said.
"Please. I'll wait downstairs until you're done. Please, Nick," I said. He looked at me for a long time and then nodded before going back inside. I walked back outside and sat down on a bench. Nick came down after ten minutes. I got up and he nodded at me before we started walking around the block. "How are you?"
"I'm good," he said. "How are you?"
"I'm okay. It's been chilly lately so I don't go out much except for school. I haven't seen you around campus either."
"Yeah," he said. "I don't have many classes so I just stay at home as well. Working on music and what not."
"That's great," I said. I'm just glad he made time to see me. Even though were just making small talk about the weather and school, I'm just happy to see him. "How are Joe and Vanessa and everyone?"
"They're doing good. We're hanging out as usual." He wasn't answering like he usually would. His cheeks weren't filled with color like before. He had his guard up and I knew why. I didn't blame him. The last time we talked wasn't exactly the greatest time.
"Nick," I said stopping him. He turned to look at me. His brows were furrowed and he just looked so upset. "I miss you. I miss your curly hair and I miss your smile. And I just miss everything about you. I'm sorry. I've always had a lot of pride. And just...like I'm swallowing my pride and my ego and I'm standing in front of your right now and I'm so sorry. I made the biggest mistake breaking up with you that day. I'm a horrible person. I guess I was just didn't want to be attached to anyone because I liked having my freedom. I liked having the upperhand. But you're different. I felt something with you and I realized that too late. I go...back to December all the time because that time spent with you was just perfect in every way. You gave me everything I could possibly ask for and I just...I treated you so bad. Freedom was nothing but missing and I wish I had realized what I had when you were mine. Maybe I'm pushing my luck and this is just wishful thinking....but if you gave me another shot, I swear I'll make it right this time."
Nick looked shocked and the color came back into his cheeks. He walked forward and cupped my face in his hands and kissed me. I held on to his wrists as if I was holding on to dear life. He kissed me with everything he had in him making me realize what it was about him that I couldn't let go. His lips left mine with a soft pop sound and he rested his forehead against mine.
"Promise me you'll never do that," he said to me.
"I promise," I whispered, dying for his lips to be on mine again. I wrapped my arms around his neck and played with the curly hair at the nape of his neck. His arms slid down and trapped my waist and pushed me up against him.
"I missed you too...so much," he said.
"Can we go back to your place and you can like...maybe show me how much you missed on your bed?" A seductive smirk appeared on my lips and Nick groaned as he pressed his lips against mine. He kissed me for a long time until neither of us could take it anymore and we walked back to his apartment, hand in hand.
