Iran's Defense Minister, Ahmad Vahidi, has wrapped up his two-day visit to Kabul. It was the first visit by an Iranian defense minister to Afghanistan in several decades.
Accompanied by a high level defense delegation, Mr. Vahidi was here to bolster defense ties between the two countries.
Security was tight in the city. But things went bad soon.
Militants attacked a police compound in Kabul and nine people were killed. Vahidi blamed the foreign forces for the rising unrest. He does not consider the presence of these forces here positive.
Ahmad Vahidi assured that his country is committed to helping Afghan defense ministry in technical services, medical issues and scholarships.
Vahidi promised that Iran will stand by Afghanistan.
And it was greatly praised by his Afghan Counterpart Abdul Rahim Wardak.
Vahidi was then briefed by Wardak on Afghan forces achievements in the fight against terrorists in the country.
Wardak said Afghan forces are ready to take over security responsibilities from NATO forces.
On the second day of his visit, Vahidi held talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in his fortified presidential palace.
Regional security threats and Iran's role in the development and reconstruction of Afghanistan were the main topics of their talks.
At the end, President has thanked Iran for its assistance.
Since the overthrow of the Taliban, Iran and Afghanistan have become very closer. Iran has so far provided more than 400 million dollars in aid to Afghanistan.
Most of the aid money has been spent in building roads, hospitals and schools.
There are now many Iranian led development projects underway in most parts of this country; and the Iranian officials are still talking about increasing their role here.
