  • I don't think he's being imperialist. Odessa was part of Russia for the first 30 years of his life. It's not a conscious thing, not everyone always remembers in conversation that a place like Odessa is no longer part of their country. I know people from Moldova who say they're "going back to Russia" when they visit their home. They grew up Russian so they think of their home as part of Russia.

  • I think he only responded to her saying that Odessa was in Russia being polite.

What was he supposed to do? Was he supposed to give her a crush course on geography and politics? Or was he supposed to correct her in the most unfriendly way? I guess he just stuck to what she said and anyway the conversation was definitely not about geography after all :))

  • my dream pairing would be to hear Beverly Sills and DH sing this opera--alas, it will never be. Renee Fleming will just have to do;)

  • She is drawing him on Pushkin's verse and literary analysis, and he is all about music.

  • @73MusicLover A dear friend of mine knows him personnaly and confirmed my impression. He is very inteligent too! Sometimes he can be a little distant, somethings the sweetest person, but always courteous! Well, an artist (a great one!) full of fans after all! THx for your reply and your invitation to bec friends. I'm honouredand happy! YF, Lu

  • @lamsalgado HOW COOL! DO YOU PERSONALLY KNOW HIM?

  • He speaks english! I didnt know that.

  • do you notice the interview has been taken in 1993. it was only 2 year after SU crashed. i think, in that time all ex-SU towns were Russian cities. They spoke Russian but thought Soviet. Because it needs to have a long time to change your habbits

  • ODESSA IS AN UKRANIAN CITY! I'm not ukrainian, i'm from Romania and it seemed to me like Hvorostovsky was a bit like a russian imperialist. Odessa also has lot's of romanians and greeks, and to be fair, Odessa is much near to Romania or the ex-romanian territory, then to Ukraine ....
