@ducttapewireandglue Yes Falcon OK...it was pretty random and not set up. I am quite lucky as I get to see NZ falcons on a very regular basis and you are right the are awesome birds!

why do you even need a net when you drill the fish to its dead anyway?

There are various factors when it comes to successfully landing fish - the lay of the terrain to be able to actually get the net to the fish, strength of tippet used, weight of rod used, skill level of the angler and a few other factors. We took the first proper opportunity to get the fish into the net with out losing it and the fish was well looked after once netted and swam away vigorously with no harm done to the fish.

i have been fly fishing my whole life. i know how it works. watching the video shows you had plenty of opportunities to land the fish. i realize this is your first fish in moving water but overplaying a fish will result in the build up of lactic acid in the fish and will stress it more than needed. once you get the fish close enough and get its head raised you should try to net it asap to avoid harm. if you were with a qualified guide he should have been aware of this. nice fish.

i agree with judgey75 should have been in the landing net a long time ago ...i dont care what this guy thinks.i lost count of the amount of times that the fish rolled on the surface
