Muscle Hill connections share their experiences with the likely 2009 Horse of the Year in an exclusive roundtable interview Four months after his retirement, Muscle Hill has but one more competition before him. But like most of his races, this one should really be no contest at all. When the Night of Stars banquet is held Feb. 28, the son of Muscles Yankee will no doubt be Horse of the Year of the first trotter to ever win the honor off an unbeaten season. While such accolades are all that remain to complete Muscle Hillís phenomenal career, the memories will last far longer for those who enjoyed and admired his performances, and those who knew and loved him best. Executive Editor Nicole Kraft recently sat down at Il Villaggio restaurant in Rutherford, N.J., with owners Tom and Lou Pontone, and Jerry Silva; Silvaís fiancee, Theresa Gentry; driver Brian Sears and trainer Greg Peck to break bread and share memories of the horse that stood so high above all others in 2009 and possibly in history.
What a shame that this horse did not race at 4! The sport is in a death spiral and is starving for equine stars...despite the relative lack of money in the breeding business (compared to say, 25 years ago), horses of this stature are routinely retired at age 3! Horses like Muscle Hill, Somebeachsomewhere should have become known to the general sports fan but of course, did not. Unfortunately, Niatross will be the last Standardbred known to people outside of the Standardbred world...
